Greetings from Charles West
Kingdom Racing Social Media Director
Numbers are quite meaningful. Take the number eleven (11) for example. Aside from the fact that this is the year 2011 and the first Indianapolis 500 was held exactly 100 years ago in 1911, eleven has a deeper meaning for Kingdom Racing this season.
Not only will this be Davey Hamilton’s eleventh Indy 500, it will be my eleventh as well. In a wonderful turn of events, Davey will be driving the No. 11 Dreyer & Reinbold Dallara/Honda through partnership with Kingdom Racing in what has been dubbed “The Most Important Race in History.” To say that we are excited about the month of May and the upcoming 95th Indianapolis 500 is an understatement. We are downright stoked. And we absolutely feel the Spirit of God putting wind in our sails as we close in on Opening Day.
My journey to Kingdom Racing has been interesting to say the least, and definitely architected by an amazing God. A little more than a year ago, having quit a job to pursue the dream of writing a book about the Indy 500, Vision Racing provided behind the scenes access all month at Indy to conduct research and write a daily fan blog on their website. For a lifelong fan of the Indy 500, it was a dream comes true.
It was during that experience a mutual acquaintance, being familiar with our backgrounds, introduced me to Kingdom Racing’s founder, George del Canto. You see, I felt God calling me to Indianapolis, not merely to tell the story of the race, but to dig deeper and share the word of Jesus Christ through racing. Fully trusting in Him, I wondered how that was going to be possible but went along for the ride. The moment I met George and learned of Kingdom Racing’s mission to share the word of Christ through motorsports, I was floored. It was startling proof that God had sent me to Indianapolis for a reason. Over the next two weeks, George and I became quick friends.
Following the 500, I returned home to Texas to finish writing over the summer and fall. As the story took final shape, its underlying Christian message really began to surface. It was an amazing and unexpected revelation. “Long Kiss: An American Ritual,” was finished and published by Thanksgiving and has been well-received by the INDYCAR racing community.
It was about that same time when George called and invited me to join the Kingdom Racing family. After praying for confirmation that it was part of Christ’s mission for me, I joyfully accepted the offer to become Kingdom Racing’s Social Media Director. It was another dream comes true.
Since then, my service has been devoted to growing our following on the Web through Kingdom Racing’s Facebook and Twitter channels. The results over the first six months have been phenomenal indeed. We’ve managed to more than double our fan following and run some very exciting contests to give back to the most amazing fans in the sport. Serving Kingdom Racing has blessed me in heeding two callings at once, first to serve Christ and spread His Message, and second, to do so through a passion for motorsports.
It has been an agonizing wait for Indianapolis to return. Last year’s Indy duty seemed to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To have an unexpected second chance to take part in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing is truly one of God’s blessings.
Throughout the month of May, I’ll be delivering insider information and insight on Davey’s quest to win his first Indianapolis 500 and following that up in June for his triumphant return to Texas Motor Speedway. I hope you are as thrilled as we are for what lie ahead. Personally, I'm excited that we are partnered with Dreyer & Reinbold for a great chance to run well and win the Indianapolis 500. Davey has already said that he's got one of the best prepared cars he's ever had at Indy. THAT has me enthused! I cannot wait to set foot back into one of my favorite places on earth, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I'm thrilled to see old friends again and certainly make new ones. After all, had it not been for the call to go to Indy, Kingdom Racing would never have come into my life, something I thank God for every day.
Be sure to follow Kingdom Racing on Facebook and Twitter and look for my blogs on our website, KingdomRacing.net. We will be doing some very exciting things throughout the coming weeks and months, so tune in to keep from missing out, especially if you are going to be attending Indianapolis or Texas. Beyond that, suggest us to one of your friends, even if they aren’t into motorsports. Who knows? They might just come around!
Lastly, the number eleven has a spiritual meaning of patience. On that subject, I'd like to share the following verse from the New Testament:
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." - Galatians 6:9
Remember, Kingdom Racing is about the Kingdom. Racing is simply how we spread the Message. Praise God!
